« Gilbert mistakes state endorsement for national one |

It was a surprisingly civil meeting considering one candidate didn't know another would be there and the other showed up late. Democratic agriculture commissioner candidates Kinky Friedman and Hank Gilbert met for their first, and likely only, editorial board meeting together late Friday afternoon at The Dallas Morning News. Friedman balked when he arrived and heard Gilbert was attending. He said he had not been told of the joint session. Editorial board staff told him it was written in a letter he had received. But Friedman need not have worried. His counterpart showed up half an hour late. This left Friedman time to talk about following the "Hightower model," throw in some jabs at Gov. Rick Perry and use his latest line, "putting the culture back in agriculture." Gilbert said he was delayed because he was feeding his cattle enough to last the six days he would be on the road. This is the closest the two will come to a debate. Despite Gilbert's demands for one, Friedman's campaign says he doesn't have room in his schedule. Friedman deferred to Gilbert when it came to specific issues like subsidies in the 2008 Farm Bill, water conservation and feed lots. He said his skill lay as a facilitator. "I would find an expert that had integrity and shut up and get out of the way to let him work," Friedman said. Instead, he focused on no-kill animal rescue sanctuaries throughout the state. When pressed, he said he would be open to farmers growing medical marijuana. Gilbert said he would not be. Gilbert talked about his agricultural background and his desire to build reservoirs and develop desalinization plants across the state. At one point, Friedman looked over at Gilbert and said, "Taken together, we'd probably make up an adequate human being." He got a smirk from Gilbert who responded, "I'm gonna have to dispute that." UPDATE: The following Monday, The Dallas Morning News editorial board recommended Friedman for the position. Read why here. Archived Comments |

The Democrats can't nominate Gilbert; he'll be under indictment for accepting a bribe from Farouk Shami by the time they get to the general election. At least Friedman has the name I.D. and charisma necessary to put him within range of beating the Republican.(the same Republican who already beat the daylights out of Gilbert the last time around). Go Kinky!
Gilbert said he was delayed because he was feeding his cattle enough to last the six days he would be on the road. He didn't mention he spent a good part of that time following his bull with a shovel, picking up enough campaign rhetoric to last until March.
Didn't Gilbert admit he also picked up a bag containing $150,000 from his biggest opponent (Farouk Shami) in the Governor's race and, as fast as an organ grinder's pet chimp can tip a hat, Gilbert immediately dropped out and tap danced his way over to the Ag Commissioner's race?
We saw how Hank Gilbert did against the Republican last time; he was beaten like a Saudi Arabian wife caught cheating. "Democrats embarrassed again" by a boring, lost loser, chasing his tail. He needs to go back and shovel his campaign material into a nice vegetable garden, where it has a chance of doing some good.
Only one registered Democrat can possibly bring home a statewide victory: Kinky Friedman. I'm crossing over to vote in the Democratic Primary so I can help Kinky be on the ballot in November. Kinky Friedman's appeal transcends political party politics; he's an educated, honest man who'll have only one organ grinder to dance to: The people of the great state of Texas.
Gilbert should be in jail, not in this race.
